Attractions

Explore Balboa Park, a 1,200-acre complex that includes eight gardens, more than a dozen museums and the San Diego Zoo. Things to see in the park include a botanical building and lily pond that are home to 2,100 plant specimens, a world-renowned rose garden and a butterfly garden. Park admission is free, although some attractions in the park have fees.

If ocean life has always intrigued you, SeaWorld is a can’t-miss stop. The park features shows starring dolphins, sea lions and more. While visiting, check out Turtle Reef, a 280,000-gallon habitat that is home to dozens of turtles.

If you’re an American history buff, head to the USS Midway Museum, located on the USS Midway, the longest-serving U.S. Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Museum admission includes a self-guided audio tour to more than 60 locations from the engine room to the control tower, narrated by Midway sailors.

Outdoor adventures

Located just north of San Diego, Hike Bike Kayak allows you to do all of that and more, including snorkeling and surfing (weather permitting). HBK’s kayaking trips often get visitors up close and personal with dolphins, harbor seals and leopard sharks.
