NIOSH adds 2 divisions for western states

NIOSH

Atlanta – NIOSH has added two divisions to broaden services in the West.

The Spokane Mining Research Division, based in Spokane, WA, intends to prevent work-related death, injury and illness in the mining, oil and gas extraction industries. The division also will conduct laboratory and field investigations into causes of “catastrophic failures” in underground metal/non-metal mines; establish design practices and tools to lower risks; and recommend criteria for new standards, policy and documents, according to a March 11 Federal Register notice.

The Western States Division aims to decrease workplace safety and health hazards in the western states, including Alaska and Hawaii. The division also will conduct prevention research for at-risk groups, promote development of occupational health programs at the state and regional levels, offer assistance, evaluate hazardous exposures, and recommend controls.
