Corporate Profiles: CavCom, Inc.

CavCom, Inc. is a privately held company that has been manufacturing two-way radio communication accessories for high noise and respirator applications since 1997. The company holds significant expertise in occupational audiology to ensure worker communication and hearing protection come together.

Due to the complexity of variables that create barriers to effective communication in the workplace, the company has incorporated a direct B2B model rather than working through distribution channels.

CavCom technical specialists engage with management, supervisors and end users to fully understand the need, urgency and desired objectives to improve worker communication. Where there is high noise, the most probable solution is improving the signal-to-noise ratio. This is achieved through controlling background noise with adequate hearing protection while electronically controlling loudness of the radio signal to prevent shift in hearing. Other barriers may need to be considered, as well:

  • Personal protective equipment
  • Worker hearing loss
  • Visual obstructions
  • Radio limitations
  • Worker comfort

Equally important is applying binaural (both ears) listening vs. one ear. Speech perception is greatly improved when the signal is received by both ears and clear speech can be realized at much lower loudness levels. The solution lies in achieving adequate hearing protection, controlling radio signal loudness and listening with both ears.
