Agency warns of forklift hazards

Phoenix – In light of several recent workplace deaths caused by the misuse of forklifts in the state, Arizona’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health is urging employers to ensure proper training and adherence to OSHA regulations.

In each of the recent workplace fatalities, the lift overturned, and the victim was thrown from the seat and crushed by the operator cage. A combination of factors led to each death, including a lack of proper training on safe forklift use, failing to use a safety belt and failing to operate the lift as approved by the manufacturer.

ADOSH urged employers to ensure the implementation of a proper forklift training program that meets manufacturer requirements and OSHA standards, and that employees follow all safety requirements – including safety belt use. Arizona employers with additional questions on the forklift standards were encouraged to contact the ADOSH consultation section.
