Bus safety summit kicks off with announcement of surprise inspections
Washington – Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood kicked off the National Motorcoach Safety Summit on Sept. 23 with the announcement that thousands of nationwide surprise safety inspections will take place, targeting motorcoaches, tour buses, school buses and other passenger vehicles.
Part of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Passenger Carrier Strike Force, the team involved in the surprise inspections will continue their sweep through Oct. 7, according to an FMCSA press release.
At the daylong summit in Washington, participants discussed the Department of Transportation’s approach to strengthening motorcoach safety, how to train professional bus drivers, and how to develop hours-of-service requirements for passenger buses, among other topics.
