Practice safe trick-or-treating this Halloween

Wilmington, DE – Parents can follow safe trick-or-treating guidelines to help ensure this Halloween is fun and safe for their children.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to occur to children during Halloween. A resource from KidsHealth from Nemours offers the following tips for safe trick-or-treating:

  • Accompany children younger than 10 years old and provide them with flashlights with new batteries for visibility.
  • For children older than 10 who are trick-or-treating alone, remind them to cross the street at crosswalks and to never assume that vehicles will stop for them.
  • At your own home, provide a well-lit outside entrance and remove items such as bicycles and wet leaves that may obstruct the walkway.
  • Make sure children know their home phone number, as well as cell phone numbers of their parents and supervising adults. They also should know how to call 911.
  • Parents and children should check all treats for signs of being poked through or torn open and taped or glued back together.
