My early SHE career was molded by the deaths of friends and co-workers. I have been in the profession now for over 30 years, but the first 20 years saw 8 deaths of people I could call friends. These were co-workers with whom I also socialized, played sports with as well as did some family things. 3 were killed in one incident of fire and explosion, in separate incidents 3 others were killed in like fashion (fires and explosions) and all of them were killed in one facility.

I had been in the EHS field for several years when a fatality occurred within our company in a different office, however it was deeply affecting to me as it was another of my EHS team members involved in a freak accident at a client facility.

As a seasoned S&H professional, I have direct experience with 2 workplace fatalities. Both of these tragic events could have easily been prevented if co-workers had merely stepped forward with the courage and conviction to effectively intervene and stop an observed at-risk behavior. Every worker needs to understand and personally accept that they have a responsibility to step-up and stop the unsafe acts of their fellow workers. If you see something - do something!
