Be a motivator when it comes to safety. Do not be a de-motivator. When visiting with others remember, "You can't make someone feel good about themselves by trying to make them feel bad!" Today I will be safe. Today I will keep others safe. Today I will include safety 'chats' when visiting with others.

Everyone and every company should have a Zero Goal, but my resolution for the year 2018 is to have 100% employee engagement in all of my facilities; for safety at work and at home.

I vow that each time I get bogged down in reporting paperwork next year, I will pop my head up every 30 minutes to remind myself what my job REALLY is - to help keep workers safe!

Waiting for a "magic date" to make a resolution is childish.
As soon as you have knowledge of a problem is the time to begin to take action. If nothing else, start to gather more information and document the fact. Leaving a problem unaddressed while you wait for the new year is a good way to get someone hurt.

I pretty much don't believe in resolutions. It seems that few ever become fully realized. That's also how I feel about Zero Goals. I have no problem with zero as an attitude because that is more realistic. Zero as a goal can be hard on morale (an injury happens on Jan 4th and what do you do? wait until 2019 to start over? restart the goal on Jan 5th?). It can also create some risk for under- and non-reporting of injuries and delays in pointing out safety hazards. We work hard to make sure employees don't feel shamed or embarrassed if they have an injury. We want it to be a learning experience for them and for all of us.

Getting to Zero involves a change that might sound strange but it really has to happen if you totally want to be in the "Race to Zero." My comment is based on moving Safety from your head to your heart. I always relate this story to when you met your spouse. Remember that? How did it happen? It started in your head and eventually moved to your heart. That same feeling has to happen with Safety in order to get to Zero - move it from your head to your heart. When all the people that you work are like working with family, you know the move has happened. Your walk matches your talk. The way you care about people and how you address a concern when they maybe are not working the safest - you'll know the move has happened. or when someone does get hurt and you really feel their pain - you now know the move has happened.
If you are not on the same page, why not? Is Safety only a word in your vocabulary and not an action or feeling that makes you get involved and want to fix the issue so no one ever experiences the same thing? Zero is possible! Move it from your head to your heart and experience ever exciting changes around Safety. It will come alive and make you feel everyone is family.

As a Medical Doctor, for me health and wellness, safety, fitness all go hand in hand. I personally believe that everyone should practice what they preach. New Year becomes a season for many people to proclaim hypocritical, often difficult to achieve loft goals related to fitness, health and wellness. But from personal experience, the most difficult battle is mental discipline. Everything becomes possible if we can control our mind. A fit, disease free, healthy and happy life is very much possible if we can usher mental discipline.
2017 was a super successful year for me on many fronts, my resolution for 2018 is to remain disease free, happy and fit and continue to promote health, wellness, safety to my family and loved ones and of course my work colleagues and to my patients.
I will do my best to practice what I preach and trust me its not difficult. Its all in the mind.
Happy 2018 everyone

To have a successful workplace safety program or process, it is a necessity that you go beyond the normal components of an off the shelf canned program. Simply having a safety program in order to say "yes, we have that in place" is like having an automobile that hasn't ran for 5 years but you insist on having transportation. Just having it is not enough, we have to know that it performing properly and ready to serve us whenever needed. My New Year's resolution is to work hard at making sure all of the components in our Safety Process gets the proper attention and continue to run smoothly, thus giving us a higher chance of achieving Zero Harm to all employees.

As corny as it my sound, developing a safety culture within the workplace is a team effort. All members of that team contribute to its success regardless of position or discipline. Communicating with one another so there is a clear understanding of goals and objectives give direction to making that effort a success.

Our company often uses the term "Friday Fire Drill" meaning do what ever it takes to get equipment repaired and out the door Friday - end of the week billing. My goal for 2018 to focus on management's role in creating this continual departure from Zero Harm. Take this term out of their vocabulary and out of the workplace.

My goal for 2018, after working in safety for over 40 years, is to support cutting the activities of the overly intrusive Cal/OSHA demigods in any way possible. I have lost too many customers in this state because they are simply fed up with the regulatory environment which is totally controlled by the democrats and unions and are leaving in droves. This is my 2018 goal because after being born in this state and living here over 60years, I too will be leaving this state in 2019, never to return.
