Rising Stars of Safety, Class of 2021
Mark C. Schall Jr.
Age: 33
Associate Professor
Auburn University
Auburn, AL
“OSH practitioners need new tools and technologies to objectively quantify exposures to risk factors associated with MSDs. Mark’s research agenda aims to directly address this need. One example of a study that led to positive, measurable outcomes involved an assessment of new, ‘ergonomic’ examination equipment used by clinical ophthalmologists. Dr. Schall used a combination of surface electromyography and wearable inertial sensors to show that the alternative equipment led to approximately 10% reductions in neck/shoulder muscle activity and a 15% reduction in the percentage of time working with the left upper arm elevated more than 60 degrees.”
