Washington — A Federal Transit Administration final rule that updates the agency’s safety certification training program for rail transit workers eases recertification while maintaining a uniform curriculum, FTA says.

Published Aug. 14, the rule expands on a 2018 rule establishing a public transportation safety certification program for rail transit workers and state safety oversight personnel by:

  • Refining communication procedures between FTA and FTA recipients subject to the rule’s requirements.
  • Allowing additional flexibility to address curriculum changes as the industry evolves.
  • Streamlining administrative requirements to improve the process for all training recipients.

In a press release, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the training requirements “will further prepare the state and local officials responsible for overseeing safety on subways, light rail and streetcars to effectively carry out their important roles.”

The rule is set to go into effect Nov. 1.
