AFL-CIO resolution calls for broader safety efforts

Los Angeles – Safety laws need strengthening, more regulations need to be issued, and workers should be better educated on job hazards and rights, a new resolution from the AFL-CIO declares.

Resolution 13 was adopted at the 2013 AFL-CIO Convention on Sept. 10 in Los Angeles. It cites multiple recent tragedies and challenges, including the April Bangladesh building collapse that killed more than 1,000 garment workers, the proposed budget cuts to NIOSH, and industry opposition to regulations.

Job safety is a “fundamental worker right,” the resolution proclaims. The resolution calls for tougher enforcement; OSHA and Mine Safety and Health Administration laws to cover all workers; the issuance of rules on silica, coal dust and combustible dust; opposition to international trade agreements lowering safety and health standards; and supporting efforts to improve working conditions.
