MSHA: 42 miners died in 2013
Arlington, VA – A total of 42 miners died on the job in 2013 – six more than in 2012, according to preliminary data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Machinery and powered haulage equipment were involved in a number of incidents. Twenty of the deaths occurred in coal mining and 22 in metal/nonmetal mining. Four of the deaths were contractors, which MSHA said was the lowest number of contractor deaths since the agency began recording that data in 1983.
