Industry Spotlight: Utilities

The utilities sector is made up of establishments specializing in electric power generation, transmission and distribution; natural gas distribution; steam or water supply; and sewage collection, treatment and disposal. More than 500,000 people were classified as private-industry utility workers in 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The group sustained approximately 19,300 recordable nonfatal injuries and illnesses for a rate of 3.5 per 100 full-time workers.
