Construction workers face some of the highest injury rates of any industry, with OSHA reporting that roughly 20% of workplace deaths occur in construction and at least 10% of construction workers suffering a work-related injury every year. Even more concerning are the indirect effects of high injury risks to construction workers, including increased stress, fatigue, chronic pain, prescription medication usage and mental health issues.
All of these are pieces of the larger cost puzzle for employers; with 11.4-plus million construction workers across the United States, employers face costs of some $2.5 billion annually. Increasingly, construction industry employers are turning to evidence-based, integrated safety and wellness solutions that incorporate baseline incident and musculoskeletal disorder prevention into a larger program based on the NIOSH Total Worker Health approach. Strategies and programs such as mental health support and wellness guidance have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing injury rates and the associated costs.
