Outstanding contributions to safety: NSC recognizes leaders

Orlando, FL — As part of its National Awards Celebration on Oct. 12, the National Safety Council honored individuals and organizations that have played a significant role in helping to make U.S. communities, workplaces and roads safer.

The event took place in conjunction with the 2021 NSC Safety Congress & Expo, the nation’s largest gathering of safety and health professionals.

Among those recognized for their outstanding contributions to safety were:
Joseph M. Kaplan Safe Drivers of the Year – professional drivers nominated for their total driving record, including miles and years driven without a preventable crash. Winners from 2020 and 2021 include Antonio Garza (Landstar Ranger), Michael D. Hart (U.S. Postal Service), William Miller (U.S. Postal Service), Michael S. Schmieks (Landstar Ranger) and Guy Wright (U.S. Postal Service).
Workplace Safety Awards – honors collective safety achievements and the implementation of effective safety policies and procedures. The 2021 winners are Amentum, CDM Smith Inc., DTE Energy, Environmental Resources Management, Hensel Phelps Services LLC, La-Z-Boy, Performance Contracting Inc. and STERIS Corp.
Corporate Culture of Safety Awards – recognizes organizations that have been the recipient of more than 50 awards through the NSC Awards Program in 2021. Winners include Amentum, CDM Smith Inc. and La-Z-Boy.
Rising Stars of Safety – recognizes tomorrow’s leaders under the age of 40 for their commitment to safety, influence on safety culture and creation of safety initiatives that produce measurable outcomes.
Scholarship winners – supports and propels young leaders of diverse backgrounds into careers in safety and health, and empowers recipients to change behavior in the workplace through educational and career advancement scholarships. The recipients:

  • Women in Safety Scholarship: Payton D. Amend, Charmaine Mullins-Jaime, D’Andrea Prim and Lexi Stone
  • Billy D. Young Memorial Scholarship: Kelley Anne Severinsen
  • Lorraine Pack Memorial Scholarship: Helen Werner
  • NSC Congress & Expo Scholarship: Jeremy Michael Bittlebrun, Vishal D. Nathu, Toluwanimi Oni and Taiwo Oyadiran
