Senate confirms Smith as solicitor of labor
M. Patricia Smith on Feb. 4 was confirmed as solicitor for the Department of Labor. Formerly the commissioner of the New York State Department of Labor, Smith was confirmed in a 60-37 Senate vote.
The solicitor of labor is DOL's head law enforcement officer, leading a staff of more than 400 attorneys to enforce labor laws.
