One month left in OSHA app contest
Washington – Tech-savvy safety advocates have less than one month left to submit a safety-related mobile application to OSHA for a chance at prize money.
The agency’s Worker Safety and Health App Challenge is seeking developers to create an app using publicly available data – such as from OSHA or NIOSH – to demonstrate the importance of occupational safety and health and explain workplace rights to young workers.
Developers have until Sept. 16 to submit an app, which could take the form of a game, data tool or networking site. Several prizes are available for stand-out apps, including $15,000 for the “Safety in the Workplace Innovator Award” chosen by OSHA administrator David Michaels and “MythBusters” TV show hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman. The public can vote for their favorite app.
“New technologies have the promise of making our safety and health resources even more accessible for workers and employers,” Michaels said in a recent blog post.
OSHA previously released its Heat Safety Tool, an app the agency developed to gauge the risk of current heat conditions for outdoor workers and offer protective measures.
