Preventing struck-by incidents: New guide available

Toronto — The Infrastructure Health and Safety Association has published a guide on reducing the risk of struck-by incidents in the workplace.
“Every year, serious injuries and fatalities occur when workers on foot are struck by vehicles or mobile equipment (such as forklifts, excavators, trucks and graders) on jobsites,” IHSA says.
The guide, published ahead of the National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents (set for April 15-19), covers how to identify factors that may contribute to struck-by incidents and how to control or manage those risks.
It also details a way to map out your worksite and find potential struck-by hazards. The editable template can be used at the start of new projects or when site conditions change, IHSA says. With the map, employers can determine and implement controls.
The stand-down – scheduled in conjunction with National Work Zone Awareness Week – is aimed at raising awareness of struck-by hazards and how to prevent them.
