Lawmaker introduces bill on motorcoach safety
Washington – Legislation introduced June 26 by Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod (D-CA) aims to improve safety in the motorcoach industry.
Developed with input from the National Transportation Safety Board, H.R. 2505 would require:
- Minimum performance standards for safety features such as emergency braking, speed limiters and collision avoidance systems on newly manufactured motorcoaches
- A Department of Transportation review of pre-trip inspection procedures for brake adjustments, with a new rule in three years upon passage of the bill
- Allowance for law enforcement to conduct en route inspections on at-risk motorcoaches at roadside stops such as weigh stations and rest stops
At press time, the bill had been referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
