NHTSA mandates expanded motor vehicle recall information
Washington – All major motor vehicle manufacturers must begin providing consumers access to vehicle safety recall information by Aug. 14, 2014, according to a final rule from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Automakers and motorcycle manufacturers will need to provide consumers with a free online tool to allow them to search recall information by Vehicle Identification Number. The information will need to be updated at least weekly.
Consumers currently can search for general recall information on NHTSA’s consumer safety website. NHTSA stated it plans to incorporate a VIN search function using manufacturers’ data.
