Association releases tips for National Poison Prevention Week
Alexandria, VA – The American Association of Poison Control Centers is reminding adults to “poison-proof” their home during National Poison Prevention Week (March 17-23).
Approximately half of calls to poison control centers involve children younger than 6, and the major substances involved are cosmetics or personal care products, painkillers, household cleaning substances, foreign bodies or toys, and topical preparations, according to AAPCC. Incidents commonly occur when parents are busy or the normal routine changes, such as during the holidays or travel.
To help prevent child poisonings, AAPCC recommends:
- Make sure medicines, cleaning products, pesticides and fertilizers are stored up high, away from children’s reach.
- Don’t leave medicines or vitamins on counters or bedside tables.
- Take your medication out of sight of children – they may try to imitate you.
- Keep batteries and magnetic toys away from children.
