Silver Spring, MD – Ladder safety is the subject of a new pocket guide from the Center for Construction Research and Training (also known as CPWR).

Covering loads to protect them during transit can be a risky task for truckers. Fall injuries often can occur during this task, which the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries estimates costs Washington truckers on average at least two months in lost time.

Ladders are basic tools that can lead some people to discount the dangerous nature of them. If proper safety precautions are not followed, ladder users easily could fall and suffer serious injuries or even death.

Between 1992 and 2005 at least 154 workers were killed by electrocution when a metal ladder came into contact with overhead power wires, according to the most recent data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Falls are the leading cause of nonfatal, unintentional injuries, affecting nearly 8 million individuals in 2005, according to the National Safety Council’s “Injury Facts.” Many of these falls involve ladders. Because a ladder is considered a basic tool, some people may discount the dangerous nature of them.
