2017 Rising Stars of Safety: 'Eliminating preventable deaths'
The National Safety Council presents the Rising Stars of Safety, Class of 2017
Derek Bell
39
Senior Director, Corporate Safety
Kansas City Power & Light
Kansas City, MO
“Derek believes it takes each of us to check and remind the other when we become complacent about safety. He knows the heartache involved in talking to a victim’s co-workers and family when someone is injured – or worse – killed on the job. Because of this, he encourages employees to share safety with family and friends. It can be anything from a campaign and pledge to not text while driving, having his wife spot as he backs in a parking place, or simply encouraging an employee to take earplugs and safety glasses home to do yard work. Derek knows that good safety habits off the job create good safety behaviors on the job.”
